Preparing your Application Package
The following is a list of the items that need to be submitted for a complete admissions package for all candidates who wish to apply to a TMI diploma programme.
Application packages can be submitted in sections or as an entire package.
The application package for the 2009/2010 academic year is now available! Download it from the links below or contact the Registrar to have one mailed to you.
A candidate's academic strengths will be considered and experience with children is highly recommended for any applicant.
Candidates must provide:
1. A completed application form for the course you are applying for
a. Application Form Infant Toddler 2010-2011
b. Application Form Full Time and Part Time Early Childhood 2010-2011
2. A résumé
Please make sure you are sending a current resume reflecting the education and work experience you have recorded on your application.
3. Three recommendations
Please make sure that your referees fill out the reference form provided by the Institute. Referees can either send the reference into TMI directly or give them to you in a sealed and signed envelope for you to send in with the rest of your application package.
An academic reference
An academic reference can be from anyone who has taught you in an academic setting. This can be a university or college professor, someone who has taught you in a professional or personal development course or even an old high school teacher you may have kept in contact with.
A reference from an employer or from a supervisor of a volunteer position.
This reference can be from a manager or a colleague you work with in any type of employment. Although it is preferred, it does not have to be from a position in a field related to education.
A reference from an acquaintance
This reference can be from someone who knows you well but is not related to you such as a friend or co worker.
4. Official transcripts of all university and graduate level work
TMI requires a transcript of all post-secondary education mentioned on your application. Please have the Institution send the transcript directly to TMI or give it to you in a sealed and signed envelope to include in your application package. If your last name is different on your transcripts then it is now, please make sure that you send in a copy of proof of name change or a copy of your marriage certificate with your application.
5. A one to two page written observation of a Montessori classroom for the age group that you are applying for.
Observation is a standard part of the Montessori method of education. Many Montessori schools are aware of TMI's application process and will welcome student candidates to come in to observe. If you are not aware of a Montessori school in your area please contact the Registrar for a list of schools.
TMI is looking for your impressions of a Montessori classroom. Candidates should feel free to write their observation in the format they feel will best reflect their experiences during their observation.
6. Payment of a $150 non-refundable application fee
Payable by cheque, certified cheque, money order, VISA or cash. If you are paying by VISA you will need to drop your application off in person to the Registrar. Office hours are Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The best time to get in touch with the Registrar in person is every Thursday between the hours of 9 a.m. and 12 p.m.
7. A Vulnerable Sector Screening done in the last six months
The easiest way to do this is to take the attached form to one of the York Region police stations listed on the form and request a Vulnerable Sector Screening. This will usually cost between $20 and $40 and can take up to six weeks. You can send in your application package prior to getting your criminal record check as long as you indicate in your package that you have applied for it and are waiting for results.
