Our History
The Toronto Montessori Institute was founded in 1971 as a Montessori training centre for teachers. At the time of its creation there were no Montessori training centers in North America and the Toronto Montessori School was having a difficult time recruiting teachers to come from abroad to teach. TMS started the Institute under the supervision of Helma Trass and Audry Sillick in order to train teachers at the Early Childhood level for their classrooms.
As the Montessori teaching method grew in Canada so did the Institute graduating more and more teachers who currently work in Montessori schools all over the world. TMI now offers Montessori teacher training at all levels and has won the recognition of most schools in and outside Canada for the quality of its training.
The Institute has had several homes over the years but it is now permanently located on the seven acre Richmond Hill campus of Toronto Montessori Schools, and continues to work closely with TMS in a symbiotic relationship. At TMI, student teachers have always received real time classroom experience by participating in classroom activities at TMS and other area Montessori schools.
